Ride and Seek Challenge - July 2014

Bike riding is fun in and of itself, but in an effort to make it even more fun, we have decided to play along with a Facebook page entitled "Bicycle Ride and Seek."  It's a fun monthly scavenger hunt of 12 items to look for while riding your bike.  When you find one of the items on the list, you take a picture of the item with your bike included in the photo and post it to the Facebook page, along with how many miles you rode. There is nothing to win.  The purpose is simply to have fun and encourage you to get out on your bike more often.  It's fun to feel like a kid again doing a scavenger hunt.  It's also camaraderie among the other participants and it's interesting seeing the creativity in the photos that are posted and how people interpret the list of items to search for.   Most importantly, it's just one more way for my sweetie and I to spend time together and enjoy ourselves!

Here is July's list:

And here are our finds:

Tomahawk Creek Trail - Leawood, KS

Date day!  20 miles on the bike on the Tomahawk Creek Trail in Leawood and Overland Park, Kansas, followed by a movie and then dinner at Oklahoma Joe's BBQ!

This attempt at mounting the Contour Roam action camera on the helmet was aborted after this ride, as there was too much swaying of his head back and forth.  Kind of makes you seasick to watch!

Several little gnome villages found in tree trunks along the trail.
The collection is referred to as "Firefly Forest".

A double word score for our Bicycle Ride & Seek this month. A water fountain AND a water fountain!

Yummy supper at Oklahoma Joe's BBQ!

Cleaning up Flint Hills Nature Trail -- Osage City 9th St to 13th St

As we have been riding the in-town Osage City portion of the Flint Hills Nature Trail, we have noticed parts are a bit overgrown.....

and trashy......

.... so we spent 2 hours on a Saturday morning cleaning it up.

We trimmed limbs.....

and picked up trash.

Thought we might have even earned a dollar for our work......

But it turned out to just be 50 cents.

When you go down under the trail to pick up crap litter like this......

You also get to see neat things like this.

The total trash that we collected (didn't get a picture of the broken plastic television case.)

We decided to leave this particular low hanging limb as is, for the purpose of deterring vehicles on the trail.

*** Update!
As a lesson to all out there! When trimming branches you should always wear long pants and a long sleave shirt so a couple of days later you do not look like this!!! Lesson Learned!   ~~S
